MUWASCO: Billing Process

The Senior Revenue Officer generates the meter reading schedule and from the schedule, the zonal Revenue officers assign the different meter reading books to the respective meter readers on their devices.

Meter Reading

After meter reading, the Revenue officer shall receive the meter reading books from the respective meter readers.

Verification

The Revenue officer shall approve the readings generated by the meter readers to facilitate meter reading verification.

Bill Calculation

The Revenue officer shall calculate and post bills for the different regions from the meter readings upon verification.

Bill Distribution

The Revenue officer shall print, send and email bills through the different communication channels.

Reporting

The Senior Revenue Officer shall analyse and produce monthly billing reports for management purposes.

Important Billing Information

  • Bills are generated monthly and should be paid within 14 days
  • Late payments attract a penalty of Ksh. 500
  • Disconnections occur from the 14th day after billing
  • Always verify your meter reading on the bill

CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES

That all customers (a customer is defined as any water or sanitation service consumer who has legal connection) shall:

Timely Payment

Pay water bills within 14 days from the day the bill was sent, failure which the account shall be liable for disconnection and will attract a penalty of Ksh. 500.

Water Deposit

Pay a refundable water deposit of an amount dependent on the class of water supply at the rate prevailing at the time of application.

Illegal Activities

Report to the company all illegal activities affecting service delivery.

Kiosk Operators

That the kiosk operators shall apply water resale rates approved by the company from time to time.

Service Lines

That the Managing Director shall be the final authority on the orientation of service lines from the main distribution networks.

How do I apply for a new water connection?

To apply for a new water connection:

  1. Visit our offices with your national ID and proof of ownership/lease agreement
  2. Fill out the application form available at our customer service desk
  3. Pay the required connection fees and deposit
  4. Our technical team will assess your location within 12 hours
  5. Installation will be completed within 2 working days after payment

What should I do if I have no water supply?

If you experience no water supply:

  • Check with neighbors to confirm if it's a localized issue

  • Report low pressure issues which we resolve within 24 hours

We undertake to repair major water pipes within 25 hours of reporting.

What happens if I don't pay my bill on time?

If bills are not paid within 14 days from billing date:

  • A penalty of Ksh. 500 is automatically charged to your account
  • Your water supply may be disconnected from the 14th day
  • Reconnection requires payment of all outstanding amounts plus penalty
  • Reconnection is done within 12 hours after payment

We encourage customers to pay bills promptly to avoid disconnection.

How do I report a water leak or burst pipe?

To report water leaks or burst pipes:

  • Call our emergency hotline: +254 712292544
  • Report through our customer care email
  • Visit our offices during working hours

Response times:

  • Major water pipes: Within 25 hours
  • Water leakages: Within 12 working hours
  • Sewer blockages: Within 12 hours

Can I transfer my water account when moving house?

Yes, you can transfer your water account:

  1. Clear all outstanding bills on the current account
  2. Apply for account transfer at our offices
  3. Provide proof of new address and ownership/lease agreement
  4. Pay any applicable transfer fees
  5. Final reading will be taken at old premises

The process takes 3-5 working days to complete.

What should I do if my water meter is faulty?

If you suspect your water meter is faulty:

  • Report immediately to our customer service
  • Our technicians will test the meter free of charge
  • If found faulty, we replace it at no cost to you
  • Bill adjustments are made based on average consumption

Customers are responsible for protecting meters from damage. Willful damage attracts penalties as per the tariff.

How is my water bill calculated?

Your water bill consists of:

  • Water Consumption Charge: Based on meter reading and tariff block rates
  • Sewerage Charge: 75% of water consumption charge
  • Fixed Meter Charge: Based on meter size (KES 180-450)
  • Water Fund: KES 10 per bill
  • Conservation Charge: KES 5 per bill
  • Penalties: If applicable for late payment or illegal consumption
